DISCLOSE joins the OCEANA expedition North Sea 2017
OCEANA, the international organization that strives to protect and restore the world’s oceans on a global scale, has organized a research cruise on the North Sea. Funded by the Dutch Postcode Lottery, the cruise is aimed to document seafloor habitats and species in 16 areas of interest, scattered over 5 national territories (Netherlands, United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark, Germany). This aim coincides with the research objectives of the DISCLOSE project. And as both OCEANA and DISCLOSE have the North Sea Foundation as a partner, cooperation was easily established.
From July 31st till August 16th, the DISCLOSE PhDs will join the OCEANA research cruise on-board the Neptune. Visiting various sections of the Dutch Continental Shelf, both OCEANA and DISCLOSE will apply an multi-method approach to study the sea bottom and all life living near it. Acoustic scans of the sea floor will be combined with underwater video footage from the ROV and the newly-developed towed video system and with sediment samples.
